That is from the fact that this roof face gets the same amount of moisture as the other roof faces, but very little sunlight. mold like moisture, but does not like sunlight, so this is a breeding ground for mold and fungi. If you let algae and fungi remain on your roof for any time, it WILL form into lichen. Lichen kills roofs because it has roots, and those roots will grab ahold of the granulars on your roofs shingles and will not let go. To remove the lichen, you would have to remove the granulars on the shingles as well, and that may create bare spots on your roof, and you may need to replace before to long at that point. Do you think your roof is unsightly and somewhat embarrassing because of mold, mildew, or algae is growing on it. The problems caused by Mold and mildew growth, along with black streaking caused by algae can most times be easily remedied at an affordable cost with the right equipment and knowing how to clean it in a non-harmful way. I have been cleaning the algae and mold off of roofs In the Green Bay, Appleton, and Door County areas now for over 10 years. The problem with algae and moss on roof tops really began when the makers of shingles started adding crushed limestone to the sand granulars on the shingles. The limestone is what the algae and fungus feed on and then grows over time. When it rains, the algae is spread downward, leaving often black streaking on rooftops. Mold usually is more spotty, but is also unsightly and can be even more dangerous in that when algae and fungus get together, it can create lichen, which has roots and will grab ahold of the granulars on your shingles and the only way then to get that lichen off from your roof is to take the granulars with it. Thats why I warn customers with this streaking problem to not wait too long, and too get it softwashed off while the problem on your roof is still just the black streaking algae or fungus, and has not yet developed into a much worse situation. If lichen has developed and is living on your roof, this could lead to you needing to replace your roof. What I have done for many satisfied customers over the years to clean up their roofs is to first spray it down with a mild solution that contains oxygen bleach. This will help to kill the algae and fungus. The hot water used in soft washing or rinsing off the algae and fungus also contributes to having the issue to not recur for a long time. However, now that the algae and fungi is dead, and dark brown, or black in color, it is still very visible. Numerous rainstorms over time may take some of it off your roof, but certainly not all of it. You want that dead fungi and algae off your roof right away because it can, and will rejuvenate. To take care of the problem quickly, after spraying the roof down with a mild bio-friendly oxygen bleach solution, I then turn the temperature to approx. 175 degrees on my hot water pressure washer. Then I use a very low pressure nozzle as to not damage the shingles, spray off all the dead algae and fungi. This is called a soft washing a roof. The application of a mild oxygen rich bleach, and a hot water pressurized rinse takes care of the problem every time. Customers are always pleasantly surprised at how clean and new looking the roof turns out. Also, because of my experience in roof cleaning, customers are surprised at how efficient I can take care of the problem, and at a unexpectedly low price.
